January 6th - 10th

NDLC has started a School Newspaper. Mrs. Steif is working to publish one newspaper per month. The journalists will be students at NDLC and carry a "theme" each month. Last month's theme was Kindness. We will read parts of this in the classroom but feel free to read it as a family, talk about it, and envision together what else your students could have added! Enjoy the NDLC Times!

Classroom News

Word Study:
Kindergarten: you, an, can, no
1st Grade: not, mom, out, now, of

Writing: This week we will be starting our How-To Unit. We will work to find small moments in our day that we can teach others how-to do something. Thinking about our audience will be a big deal. For example: writing about how math goes for a new student or substitute teacher, how to take care of a dog for a future dog owner, etc. Take a few minutes this week to ask your child what they will write about.

Also, if you are in school to pick up your child or visiting, stop in the NDLC Hall to check out our Nonfiction Writing. Pick a few pieces to enjoy and jot a compliment down. It is so wonderful to have an audience!

Reading: We started a new unit last week! Readers Have Big Jobs to Do is our focus. Each student is going to be the boss of their reading. Readers say, "I can do this!" In class we will talk about the different tools/strategies readers use to solve words. We will learn how to "Check it!" to self-monitor as we read. Your child will make a goal for their reading this week and celebrate their hard work at the end of the week.

Researchers Workshop: We will be researching what Holiday's are celebrated around the world throughout the year. This will introduce our class to diverse cultures and give them a global perspective. They will choose a Holiday to research and do a final project at the end of this week.

What's new this week in Kindergarten?

Math: Your mathematician will be reviewing shapes by sorting them by color, shape, and size. We will be doing addition and subtraction stories using 5-groups, which will help your child solve problems with larger numbers. We will also be classifying with equal to and not equal to.

What's new this week in First Grade?

Math: We are learning tens and ones. Your mathematician will use these skills to show greater 2-digit numbers. This week we will be focusing on place value, solving story problems using different methods, and matching up numbers with their number words.

2nd Day of School

Hello!  We have had so much fun the first two days of school.  We are learning each others names and getting to know each other.  We have been practicing routines in our classroom.  I can already tell it's going to be a great year :) Here is a 2nd day of school picture...(since we forgot a first day picture!) And a silly one...because that's the only way I could get them to all smile for the first one!  I hope that you are hearing great things at home too. As always if you have any questions, let me know. -Samantha

September 23-27th

I am very proud of how well the students handled all of the safety drills we practiced last week.  They were very understanding when they were explained and brave when they practiced.  Of course, we hope we will only ever have to practice these things, but if a situation of any type (weather, fire, intruder) comes up we will be prepared. Classroom News Star of the Week: This week we will learn about Elise, Tristan, Yenghua, Hayes, and Ariyah. Word Study: This week we will focus on the letters a, g, d, s.  We will be working on handwriting and sounds. Field Trips: Thank you for getting field trip forms back!  I will be reaching out to chaperones for our Piggly Wiggly trip on October 1st tomorrow. Writing: In writing this week we are going to talk about telling our stories step by step and not missing any detail!  We will make our characters have feelings in our pictures and words.  We will also try to get more sounds in our words. October 14-18

Last week we met our long term sub, Mrs. Holly Lemm.  She spent the day with us on Wednesday and is very excited to be working in our class while I am out on maternity leave.  We are planning for her to begin in our classroom on October 30th...unless baby girl decides to come earlier :) She will share more information about herself as she begins her time in our classroom.  Her email will be lemmh@kaukaunasd.org.  I look forward to meeting with you this week at conferences to share how much your child has grown already and set goals to continue to work on.  Classroom News Conferences: Thank you for signing up for conferences. If you haven't signed up here is the link! https://ptcfast.com/schools/NDLC\ Field Trips: On Wednesday we will have our walking trip to Piggly Wiggly.  Please make sure that your child is dressed for the weather and is wearing walking shoes!  This will tie into our community unit and is always a fun trip!
