January 13th - 17th

Last week a pink letter went home asking about enrollment for next year. Please sign and return as soon as you can. Thank you!

On Monday there will be a letter explaining Celebrate NDLC week and Family Night!

Classroom News

Word Study:
Kindergarten: went, are, this, look
1st Grade: put, ran, sat, read, run

Writing: Our How-To Unit started off great last week. The class is super excited to write How-To books and share them with the class. They are working hard to identify their audience. This gives students a purpose for their writing. On any given day you can walk into our classroom and see students conferring with each other, giving one another feedback on their planning or on their revision process.

Also, if you are in school to pick up your child or visiting, stop in the NDLC Hall to check out our Nonfiction Writing. Pick a few pieces to enjoy and jot a compliment down. It is so wonderful to have an audience!

Reading: In reading we will continue our unit on, "Readers Have Big Jobs to Do." We will continue to use the tools we know and elaborate on them. Readers will think about what kind of word would fit, slow down to break up long words, use words they know to solve words they don't know, and try sounds many ways to figure out words.

Researchers Workshop: This week we will be starting a unit on families. We will discuss how families are alike and different. We will read books about families and draw our own family portrait.

Kindergarten Math: In math this week we will focus on building teen numbers and the foundation for place value. We will be solving addition and subtraction story problems through drawing to help better understand the problem and how to solve it. We will continue to determine if groups are equal or not equal.

First Grade Math: This week we will continue focusing on tens and ones. We will use place value to compare numbers. Your mathematician will learn addition strategies to solve decade number equations.

Math Apps: I know that some students spend time on a tablet or computer. Our Library Site has set up a page with links your child can use to practice their math facts.

2nd Day of School

Hello!  We have had so much fun the first two days of school.  We are learning each others names and getting to know each other.  We have been practicing routines in our classroom.  I can already tell it's going to be a great year :) Here is a 2nd day of school picture...(since we forgot a first day picture!) And a silly one...because that's the only way I could get them to all smile for the first one!  I hope that you are hearing great things at home too. As always if you have any questions, let me know. -Samantha

December 16th - 20th

This year our NDLC and Quinney Council members have chosen to help out military personnel deployed overseas in honor of Adam Hall. Adam is a husband of Amber Hall, an educational assistant for NDLC and Quinney School. He is also the father of Oliver, a fourth grade student at Quinney, and Lilah, a second grade student at Quinney School. Adam's troop was recently deployed and will be gone for 12-14 months. We are looking for our Quinney and NDLC families to donate personal care items, snacks, or money. The monetary donations will be used to cover the cost of shipping and to purchase extra supplies. All items should be new and in original packaging. Thank you in advance for your help in supporting our troops. For item suggestions and to sign up, go to Sign Up Genius . After signing up for items, please send them to school with your child by December 20, 2019 . December 19th, we will be enjoying a Grinch Day! Everything green and Grinch related. We will be watching the original G...

September 23-27th

I am very proud of how well the students handled all of the safety drills we practiced last week.  They were very understanding when they were explained and brave when they practiced.  Of course, we hope we will only ever have to practice these things, but if a situation of any type (weather, fire, intruder) comes up we will be prepared. Classroom News Star of the Week: This week we will learn about Elise, Tristan, Yenghua, Hayes, and Ariyah. Word Study: This week we will focus on the letters a, g, d, s.  We will be working on handwriting and sounds. Field Trips: Thank you for getting field trip forms back!  I will be reaching out to chaperones for our Piggly Wiggly trip on October 1st tomorrow. Writing: In writing this week we are going to talk about telling our stories step by step and not missing any detail!  We will make our characters have feelings in our pictures and words.  We will also try to get more sounds in our words. What's new this w...
