Sept. 30- Oct. 4

What a fun and busy week we had!  I have to say I am so proud of the way the students have taken over ownership of our rules and the things and procedures in our classroom!  We had a chance to introduce our school family this week at the assembly!  Check out the poster we made to share some of our favorite things!

Conferences: Here is the sign up link for conferences.  I look forward to meeting with you!

Star of the Week: This week we will learn about Addison, Josie, Kaylee, and Tyson.

Field Trips: Piggly Wiggly: POSTPONED new date coming soon!   Kindergarten Trip on Oct. 11th : Please remember to get forms back by Oct. 7th!

Word Study: This week we will focus on the letters e, r, p, j.  We will be working on handwriting and sounds. I will be introducing high frequency words this week.  Kindergartners will get new words every two weeks and first graders will get new words weekly.  At first the first grade words will be review of last weeks weeks words.  I will list them in the blog so that you are aware of them at home.  You might search for them in books or practice writing them at home.
Kindergarten: I, a, to, the
First Grade: I, a, to, the, is  (there will be review words at the beginning)

Writing: We will be using the book The Night of the Veggie Monster as a mentor text this week.  We will notice what the author George McClements does in his small moment story that we can try in our books.  We will try to add exact action, pop out words, and feelings.

Researchers Workshop: We will continue to study our community this week.  We will make a map to help us get to Piggly Wiggly and we will read the book Me on the Map to see how we fit into the community.  Kindergartners will be joining Mrs. Hixon's kindergarten class to interview members of our school community.  First graders will begin researching different kinds of communities (urban, suburban, and rural)

What's new this week in Kindergarten?

Math: This week, mathematicians will work on adding and subtracting using pictures.   We will connect this work to the work we do as story tellers to understand that there is a first, next and last part to math problems.  We will continue to work writing numbers 1-5 and seeing numbers of objects in a group.

Reading: On Monday, we will have a celebration to mark the end of our first reading unit. The readers will choose their favorite book to carry around during our reading parade through the school. Students have worked so hard to learn to retell their old favorite storybooks using the exact words from the book, sounding like the characters, and using connecting words to keep the story going. As we continue to work in these "Old Favorites" in our next unit, we will learn to use the pictures and words to really think about how the character might be feeling and what they are thinking. These colorful stories provide a great base to begin that comprehension work with our emerging readers.

What's new this week in First Grade?

Math: This week we will be talking about story problems and introducing the counting on strategy.  Counting on is an efficient addition strategy that we hope all students move to using.  Here is an example of what that looks like.  Instead of counting all numbers, we say the bigger number and count on however many more.

Reading: We are continuing to do some partner work this week.  We will coach each other to use good reading habits to solve tricky words in books instead of just telling what the word says, we will practice doing something at the end of our books, and set goals together.  We will celebrate all of our new reading habits at the end of the week.

Upcoming Events:

October 1: K/1 Field trip to Piggly Wiggly
October 2: Picture Day- You can send envelopes to school before or on this day!
October 4: No School for students
October 11: Kindergarten only Field Trip- Please send permission slip and $5.25 by 10/7

Have a great week!

2nd Day of School

Hello!  We have had so much fun the first two days of school.  We are learning each others names and getting to know each other.  We have been practicing routines in our classroom.  I can already tell it's going to be a great year :) Here is a 2nd day of school picture...(since we forgot a first day picture!) And a silly one...because that's the only way I could get them to all smile for the first one!  I hope that you are hearing great things at home too. As always if you have any questions, let me know. -Samantha
