December 9th - 13th

This year our NDLC and Quinney Council members have chosen to help out military personnel deployed overseas in honor of Adam Hall. Adam is a husband of Amber Hall, an educational assistant for NDLC and Quinney School. He is also the father of Oliver, a fourth grade student at Quinney, and Lilah, a second grade student at Quinney School. Adam's troop was recently deployed and will be gone for 12-14 months. We are looking for our Quinney and NDLC families to donate personal care items, snacks, or money. The monetary donations will be used to cover the cost of shipping and to purchase extra supplies. All items should be new and in original packaging. Thank you in advance for your help in supporting our troops. For item suggestions and to sign up, go to Sign Up Genius. After signing up for items, please send them to school with your child by December 20, 2019.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me. My email is lemmh@kaukaunasd.org.

Word Study:
Kindergarten: at, see, he, do
1st Grade: did, has, her, him, fun

Writing: We will be finishing up our Nonfiction Unit this week. Students will be doing research this week to find a picture to help them say more about their topic. We will edit "On the Go" with varying end punctuation to bring out our teaching books meaning. Students will also learn to use pop-out words and speech bubbles to add additional information.

Reading: We are still in our Nonfiction Unit. We will be focusing on reading with feeling, reading like a writer, and talking and thinking about key words. By the end of the week we are going to be bringing our nonfiction books to life by using the skills we have learned so far by reading with a teaching voice, using our body, and knowing the facts to share with our audience.

Researchers Workshop: We will continue our exploration through centers this week during our Researchers Workshop time. Students will explore how animals have different parts that help them survive in nature. We will also explore how humans mimic plants and animals. In addition, students will explore plants and animals on PebbleGo and practice taking notes.

What's new this week in Kindergarten?

Math: We will be telling many math stories to solve 1-10 addition problems this week. We will also be grouping tens, practicing writing 11-14, and going through partners of 6. The kindergarten class has been enjoying using our foam shapes, color tiles, and colored chips to create their own addition problems and telling a story.

What's new this week in First Grade?

Math: We are ending Unit 3 this week, with a review and assessment at the beginning of the week. Your mathematician will be adding to their fact fluency with the +3 pattern. By the end of the week we will be grouping tens and exploring teen numbers.

Upcoming Events:
December 16th - Culver's Night for NDLC!
December 19th - Wear Green for Grinch day in our class!
December 23rd - January 1st - No School

Have a wonderful week!

Hello!  We have had so much fun the first two days of school.  We are learning each others names and getting to know each other.  We have been practicing routines in our classroom.  I can already tell it's going to be a great year :) Here is a 2nd day of school picture...(since we forgot a first day picture!) And a silly one...because that's the only way I could get them to all smile for the first one!  I hope that you are hearing great things at home too. As always if you have any questions, let me know. -Samantha
