Classroom News

Word Study:
Kindergarten: at, see, he, do
1st Grade: be, as, ball, by, day

Writing: The students love to write about all they know. Their nonfiction topics are awesome. So many great ideas: Pokemon, Animals, Storms, and much more! We will be focusing on adding details (elaborating) by comparing, adding personal stories, and adding a how-to within an informational piece.

Reading: We are still in our Nonfiction Unit. The students are getting super smart about the world around them! The past few weeks we focused on solving tricky words in nonfiction books...using all our word detective skills!

We are talking about keywords in nonfiction reading. We are learning how to grow our understanding of new words (like talon, nocturnal, etc.) and own it, say it, use it in a sentence, and make sure we understand it. Nonfiction always offers lots of topic specific words.

Researchers Workshop: This week we head into our week of exploration. Students will explore how animals have different parts that help them survive in nature. We will also explore how humans mimic plants and animals. In addition, students will explore plants and animals on PebbleGo and practice taking notes.

What's new this week in Kindergarten?

Math: We are ending our Unit 2 this week, with a review and assessment at the beginning of the week. We will dive into Unit 3 at the end of the week with identifying partners that represent a given number 1-10 and introducing groups of 10.

What's new this week in First Grade?

Math: This week we will continue working on our doubles pattern but through subtraction. We will also continue to work on those tricky story problems that have the unknown in different positions to help strengthen their understanding of the addition and subtraction process.

Math Games!

Have an excellent week!

2nd Day of School

Hello!  We have had so much fun the first two days of school.  We are learning each others names and getting to know each other.  We have been practicing routines in our classroom.  I can already tell it's going to be a great year :) Here is a 2nd day of school picture...(since we forgot a first day picture!) And a silly one...because that's the only way I could get them to all smile for the first one!  I hope that you are hearing great things at home too. As always if you have any questions, let me know. -Samantha
