Word Study:
Kindergarten: we, it, and, up
1st Grade: get, come, got, play, was

Writing: We are headed into our nonfiction unit in writing. We will be learning how to write books that teach about the world. This week we will review how writers touch and tell, planning their stories across pages. We will talk about how we can use our teaching voice to teach our audience all we know about our topic!

Reading: In Reading we will also be heading into our nonfiction unit. We will spend the first week learning that nonfiction readers take a sneak peek before they read, thinking about what they might learn. We will also learn to slow down and study the whole page, learning all we can from: words, pictures, captions, labels, etc.

Researchers Workshop: Last week we started our new Mystery Science unit on Plants and Animals. We learned how different bird beaks were useful for different reasons. This week we are learning about how mother animals take care of their babies and how animals survive in their environment.

In Researchers Workshop we use an Online Resource, Mystery Science, to support the beginning of each unit. This helps build the students background knowledge. It is fun and engaging...the students love it!

What's new this week in Kindergarten?

Math: This week we will continue to create story problems with addition equations and later in the week add in subtraction equations. We will review all the parts of triangles and also learn two new patterns, +1 and -1.

What's new this week in First Grade?

Math: In math we will continue to work towards learning math facts, 1-10. Every other week we focus on a new pattern. For example: we might do +2, and then -2 next. Students then create fact cards that they review before doing math games to support fact fluency.

Currently our unit is still focusing on finding the unknown partner and being able to solve word problems with unknown partners.

Hello!  We have had so much fun the first two days of school.  We are learning each others names and getting to know each other.  We have been practicing routines in our classroom.  I can already tell it's going to be a great year :) Here is a 2nd day of school picture...(since we forgot a first day picture!) And a silly one...because that's the only way I could get them to all smile for the first one!  I hope that you are hearing great things at home too. As always if you have any questions, let me know. -Samantha
